SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has learned Owen “Butch” Morgan passed away peacefully in his sleep overnight. He was 73-years-old. Sources close to the Morgan family tell RNM he died in his home with his family by his side.

Morgan, the former Democrat Chair of the St. Joseph County Democrat Party, was a political powerhouse across the state of Indiana. He had major influence in local, state and national campaigns and was known as one of the most powerful people in Indiana before gaining infamy in an election fraud case a decade ago.

Morgan was convicted of two counts of conspiracy in 2013, stemming from a scheme to forge petition signatures in 2008. You can read more about the case in a South Bend Tribune article here.

Morgan’s health declined rapidly as of late. He suffered a severe stroke late last month.

  1. An infamous yet hilarious BM moment was the November night in 1998 when the Republicans overthrew Prosecutor Barnes and Sheriff Speybroek in an election coup for the ages. Alas, Chris Toth and Rick Seniff proved to be incompetent one-term squatters but their wins ousted a pair of Democrats who needed ousting.
