UPDATE: Several hours after this story was originally published, a spokesperson for Whole Woman’s Health sent an email claiming the death report was “staff clerical error.” You can read that full statement here.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana is working to get more details on the reported death of an 18-year-old woman who received an abortion at Whole Woman’s Health in South Bend.
According to the report, the young woman passed away after receiving an abortion on May 16th, 2020. While the report shows the mother died, it also says no complications arose from the procedure. The document is signed by a Dr. Barbara L. Williams. According to state documents, Dr. Williams holds two active physician licenses in the state of Indiana. Both licenses show her practicing in the South Bend area.
RNM reached out to both the Indiana Department of Health and Whole Woman’s Health to get more information about the reported death and to get to the bottom of the obvious discrepancies on the report itself. Neither have responded to those requests.
Whole Woman’s Health provides abortion pills to women up to 10 weeks pregnant and referrals to abortion providers for women who are further along.
The clinic is currently operating without a license. The state of Indiana refused to issue a license to the facility several years ago. In 2019, a federal judge issued an injunction, allowing the clinic to open while its case goes through the courts.
