Three Niles School Board Members Being Recalled

NILES, Mich. — A group of Berrien County parents tell REAL News Michiana they’ve been successful in collecting enough signatures to recall three members of the Niles Community Schools Board of Trustees. The three members are President Mark Wortham, Treasurer Kyle Zelmer and Trustee David Fish. The group is delivering the signatures to the county clerk today.

“We realized there are some people on the board who are not effective and do not have the best interest of our children in mind.” Victory Woodall, Events Coordinator for We the Parents, said.

We the Parents is a grassroots group that was created by several parents who did not like what they saw being taught in public schools. The group prides itself on three core values: Faith, Family and Freedom.

Woodall explains We the Parents has been organized to fight against many of the things RNM has been reporting on, including Critical Race Theory being taught in Niles Schools.

Woodall tells RNM the group started discussing the recall effort for multiple school board members in four different school districts in February of this year. They started collecting signatures in Niles about two months ago. They have approximately 2,500 signatures to recall for each of the three Niles board members.

From here, the clerk will verify the signatures. The recalled members will then be put on the November ballot where they will face challengers to their seats. Woodall tells RNM that We the People has 4 candidates running for board positions this fall.

“We are optimistic. As we’ve been out collecting signatures, once we share information with these folks, people are very supportive and promising their votes for our candidates because they support the same values.” Woodall said.

Niles could be just the beginning of the recall effort in Berrien County. We the Parents is currently collecting signatures to recall school board members in Watervliet Public Schools (Board President Bill Spaulding), St. Joseph Public Schools (Trustees Brett Weir and Kathy Weykamp) and Lakeshore Public Schools (Board President Jason Beckrow and Trustee Rachel Wade).

We the Parents has approximately 30 school board candidates running for seats across Berrien County this fall.

  1. It’s time to throw the rascals out, We the People don’t want Common Core, CRT, DEI, LGBTQ+ garbage taught in the schools. Teach STEM, reading, writing, arithmetic and good citizenship. We Shall Overcome the vile and perverse in our schools.
