Penn HS Gives 14-Year-Olds Book Depicting Sex, Masturbation, N-Word

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has discovered teachers at Penn High School assigned an extremely sexual book to multiple freshman classes. The children in those classes are as young as 14-years-old. Multiple parents have contacted RNM with their concerns as the novel describes sex, in-depth masturbation and even throws out the N-word. Further, the author has recently been credibly accused of sexual misconduct himself and appeared to admit to the accusations. The book has also been banned in some school districts across the country.

The book is called The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, written by Sherman Alexie. According to Goodreads.com, Alexie “tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot.”

However, the book contains extreme sexual content that many parents believe should not be presented to 14-year-old children.

In one excerpt, Alexie writes “Naked woman + right hand = happy happy joy joy. Yep, that’s right, I admit that I masturbate. I’m proud of it. I’m good at it. I’m ambidextrous, if there were a professional Masturbators League, I’d get drafted number one and make millions of dollars. And maybe you’re thinking, ‘Well, you really shouldn’t be talking about masturbation in public.’ Well, tough. I’m going to talk about it because EVERYBODY does it. And EVERBODY likes it. And if God hadn’t wanted us to masturbate, then God wouldn’t have given us thumbs.”

On another page, Alexie strings together a cacophony of profane language that includes the N-word.

“Did you know that Indiana’s are living proof that n*****s f*** buffalo?” Alexie wrote.

One parent provided RNM emails between her, one of the teachers who assigned the book and the Penn High School Principal.

“All throughout this book is sexual content, drug abuse, sexualizing women, boy masturbation and over 25 references of inappropriate language… Please explain to me the purpose of this book. How does this provide an excellent education? Is it worth exposing my 14 year old daughter to this filth… Why is it okay for you to choose to expose my young child to things we work hard to protect her from?”

The parent goes on to cite Indiana laws describing the dissemination of harmful material to minors.

While the teacher himself did not respond, Penn High School Principal Sean Galiher, did. In his response, he appears to brush off the concerns of pornographic material being provided to 14-year-old children.

“You can expect a response to your questions on Monday. We will provide a summary of the unit of study and the overall goals of the unit… an alternative text can be made available to a student if requested.” Galiher wrote. “In the future, I respectfully as that you communicate directly with me and not send my teachers information regarding your opinions on Indiana Code. If you would like to discuss further on Monday, please let me know.”
