INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A central Indiana children’s minister took on the role of activist/superhero to protest a drag show for kids scheduled for the Indiana Convention Center this past weekend. The drag show was part of several events involved in the annual “PopCon” convention — a comic book and popular culture convention in Downtown Indianapolis. Sticking to the theme of the event, the protester donned a Spiderman costume as he sat outside of the Convention Center’s front steps with a sign reading, “Spidey says NO drag for kids.”

“Adults can do what they want. But, as soon as you bring kids into the mix, every hair on my back stands up.” The children’s minister, who asked not to be identified out of fear of retaliation, said.

According to the Spiderman activist, he was inspired to protest the event following a REAL News Michiana investigation exposing the drag show for children. While PopCon kicked off on Friday, with the drag show scheduled for Saturday, the protester set up his demonstration this past Thursday.

“The reason we went the day before is because we wanted the message to get to the organizers. Our goal was not to pick on the attendees of PopCon in general.” He said.

And, to the activist’s surprise, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

“Every person we talked to was thumbs up, ‘I agree’… one guy was vaping and gave a thumbs up. A girl with blue hair gave a thumbs up. Everyone on the streets on Indy that night was in lockstep agreement that this is wrong.” He said. “It was so encouraging. Our culture is being held hostage by a very small minority of loud people (who support things like drag shows for kids).”

Despite his obvious Christian values as a children’s minister, the protester took a tactful approach in not pushing an overt religious tone in his messaging.

“This was an opportunity to unite with people with a common moralistic worldview. I believe these morals were given to us by God, written on our hearts by God, but it was a time to unite with everyone who understands this (drag for children) is not a good thing for children. It was very refreshing.” He said. “This is simply giving voice to the voiceless, our children.”

BACKGROUND

PopCon partnered with a local business called “Hampton and Co.” to put on the drag show for children. It turns out, Hampton and Co. frequently hosts sexual drag events with children in the audience.

An RNM investigation last month discovered video of a drag show at Hampton and Co.’s Indianapolis storefront in which children are sitting in the front row giving dollar bill tips to the performer as he twerks and does the splits while wearing women’s underwear.

The video discovered by RNM was posted by Hampton and Co. on Facebook a little more than a year ago. Hampton and Co. appears to have removed the video after RNM reposted it. However, RNM made a recording prior to the video’s removal. In it, you will see at least two young children. One child appears to be a 6-8-year-old girl who is sitting on an adult’s lap as she holds out a dollar bill to give to the drag queen. The video can be viewed below.
