ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. — Incumbents ruled the day in St. Joseph County Republican primary races, with County Council District F Councilman Randy Figg and District 3 County Commissioner Tony Hazen both staving off primary opponents.

Figg ran away with his race against current middle school teacher Kris Verash in a landslide 64%-36% victory.

Hazen held off two primary opponents in a very tight race which included former Mishawaka Councilwoman Maggie Demaegd and North Liberty business owner Tom McCormick. Hazen ended up beating McCormick by only 46 votes. Demaegd came in a distant third place, taking approximately 16% of the vote.

This is the first campaigns for both Figg and Hazen in their current seats as both had been caucused into their positions by the party during their current terms due to vacancies from resignations of their predecessors.

Another hotly observed race saw former Penn Harris Madison School Board Candidate Andy Rutten run away with a victory against opponent Kent Hizer. Despite Hizer being seen as the frontrunner by many, Rutten won in a 63%-37% landslide. Rutten and Hizer were battling for the District I Council seat which is being vacated by incumbent Mark Root who chose not to seek reelection.

  1. I think Maggie Demaegd was a spoiler in that race, pulling just enough votes off McCormick to hand the race to Hazen.
