MISHAWAKA, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has confirmed a member of the color guard staff for the Penn High School Marching Band has been removed following an RNM story uncovering a recent arrest. According to court documents, police arrested 37-year-old Ryan Paul Prebys for Operating While Intoxicated on August 6th. Court documents allege Prebys was drunk when they found his SUV in or near a ditch on SR 2 near Hollywood Road in South Bend. His blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit at .188. Last week, RNM discovered Prebys was listed as a staff member on the Penn High School Marching Band website. As of Monday, his name had been removed.
At the same time, Prebys was also the Director for the Concord High School Color Guard. According to Concord Community Schools records, Prebys submitted his resignation to the school district on August 11th, only 5 days after his arrest. The resignation was approved by the board on August 21st.
It’s not clear if Prebys was ever hired by the Penn Harris Madison School Corporation or if he was volunteering. RNM scoured years of PHM’s records to track down the approval of his hiring, but could not find anything. Inquiries regarding his involvement as a potential volunteer have gone unanswered. However, social media posts appear to show Prebys was involved in the Penn Color Guard from at least 2022 while he was also the Director of the Concord program.
On September 7th, RNM reached out to PHM to get details about Prebys’ involvement with the Penn Color Guard. We never received a response. It’s unclear what, if any, vetting or background checks were done prior to his involvement with Penn High School.
