As St. Joseph County Health Officer, Dr. Robert Einterz, finishes his last week as the head of the county’s health department, REAL News Michiana has put together a week long series of stories to look back at his accomplishments. Einterz announced his resignation late last year following the 2022 election. His last day is Friday, March 31st.

NUMBER 4: Dr. Einterz' famous temper erupts again

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED JANUARY 27TH, 2023

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — St. Joseph County Health Officer, Dr. Robert Einterz, reportedly went on an hours long angry and profanity laden tirade in the County-City building in late January, according to multiple sources. Sources who wished not to be named tell REAL News Michiana that Dr. Einterz was upset over the firing of St. Joseph County Board of Health President, Dr. Jason Marker.

“He was fuming mad. Yelling. He locked himself in his office for hours.” One source tells RNM.

Einterz is also attempting to undermine Indiana law, by pressuring the County Commissioners to reverse the decision to fire Dr. Marker. Marker was fired by the Chair of the St. Joseph County GOP. The Commissioners cannot change that action. Details behind the firing and replacement can be read here.

EINTERZ' FAMOUS TEMPER

Einterz is well known for his temper and angry demeanor. At a Board of County Commissioners meeting in December, Einterz was so angry that he squeezed a stress ball so hard it went flying out of his hands. Einterz reportedly carries a stress ball with him most places to help subdue his out of control temper.

In a crazed and disgusting tangent discussing abortion during a St. Joseph County Board of Health meeting in July of 2022, Einterz made the claims that a board member’s 6-year-old son could rape the 9-year-old daughter of the board’s attorney.

St. Joseph County's top doctor announced that he is resigning from his position in December. The resignation is effective at the end of March. The announcement came as the county’s newest elected officials were about to take office, giving Republicans control over the County Council and County Commission for the first time in history. Sources tell RNM, the new county leaders planned on diving into several controversies that occured at the hands of Einterz in the past several years, including a coordinated attack against a local business that has led to a costly lawsuit.

One of the biggest scandals during his time at the Health Department is the illegal public health orders Einterz put into place for months. A judge eventually found that his orders for mandatory masking and fines were illegal, as a non-elected official could not unilaterally make policy decisions that would impact the entire community.

In July of 2021, an RNM investigation discovered Einterz and several Health Board members were breaking Indiana public records laws by holding secret meetings.

During the height of COVID, RNM published a story regarding one of Einterz’ employees stating she wished doctors would deny care to people who did not wear a mask or get the COVID vaccine. It does not appear the employee was ever disciplined for the remarks.

Einterz’ Health Department was also responsible for stretching data to justify closing churches during COVID.
