SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has obtained video showing a portion of a concrete column breaking away from a South Bend parking garage, smashing onto the sidewalk and street. The debris destroyed a city light pole and nearly smashed a car with a woman inside. The incident happened at 3:14pm on Sunday at the intersection of Wayne and Main Streets downtown at the Northwest Garage.
This isn't the first time a parking garage has posed a threat in South Bend. The nearby Wayne Street Parking Garage also had some major issues. In 2014, the South Bend Tribune published an article regarding portions of the brick facade coming loose and falling to the ground. At the time, the city was considering a $600,000 facelift to fix that issue. According to the South Bend Tribune, the garage was built in 1989 for $4.6 million. That work was completed.
According to St. Joseph County property records, the garage involved in Sunday's incident owned by 112 WEST JEFF LLC.
