Woman kidnaps man, ties him up with ball gag, beats him with frying pan, forces him to sell property, robs him

Mariah Conn-Wilhelm, Mugshot: St. Joseph County Jail

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — A 61-year-old Mishawaka man is recovering from several broken bones after he was kidnapped, robbed and beaten by a 28-year-old woman and her friend last week. According to court documents, the man was beaten with a frying pan, stripped naked, tied up with a ball gag and held at gunpoint as he was robbed of thousands of dollars.

Court documents allege a friend of 31-year-old Mariah Kay Conn-Wilhelm contacted the victim around 2:00am on September 7th with alarming text messages. The victim, who REAL News Michiana has chosen not to name, went to Conn-Wilhelm’s home out of concern for her safety and the safety of her young child. When the victim arrived at her home, she began beating him with a frying pan.

“CONN-WILHELM then contacted a friend of hers identified as Shannon who came to
the residence. (The victim) reported that CONN-WILHELM and Shannon tied the victim up in a rope, chain, and hand restraints and forced a ball gag in his mouth.” Charging documents read. “CONN-WILHELM and Shannon then struck (the victim) with multiple objects including a frying pan and a pistol.”

According to court documents, the two Conn-Wilhelm and Shannon beat the victim for several hours, before forcing him to make a phone call to sell a property of his.

“CONN-WILHELM and Shannon held a gun to (the victim’s) head and ordered him to call a property buyer named Austin (with whom the victim had been negotiating a property sale of one of the victim’s properties) and instruct Austin to make the purchase check for approximately $17,0000 to CONN-WILHELM and to only contact CONN-WILHELM about the property sale. Shannon left the apartment after the phone call to Austin.” Charging documents claim.

Eventually, Conn-Wilhelm went to pick up the check, taking her 5-month-old baby with her. While she was gone, the victim was able to free himself and get help.

It’s not clear of Conn-Wilhelm’s baby witnessed any of the crimes. However, investigators found blood splattered on the child’s pack and play and baby swing (there was no crib in the home), the frying pan was next to the baby swing and the restraints were located next to the nursing gliding chair. Officers also found multiple plastic bags containing meth.

According to charging documents, Conn-Wilhelm admitted to committing several of the crimes.
