SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has learned one of Michiana’s largest employers, Beacon Health System, has invited a radical racist to be the speaker at a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion event. Karrah Herring, who is currently the Chief Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Officer of the State of Indiana, is scheduled to speak at the event on October 13th.

Herring has a long history of writing racist comments about white people. She has referred to “white folk” as corporate criminals. She bashed white parents by writing “some of these white parents & children have never seen color.” She called white people “heartless.” She even criticized interracial relationships when she wrote “pink penis = no go.”

Herring is also known to bash gay people online.

Nearly all of those tweets were written during Herring’s employment with the University of Notre Dame.

REAL News Michiana reached out to Beacon Health officials for comment. As of publication, they have not responded.

Despite Herring’s overt racism, she became the State of Indiana’s first Chief Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Officer in February of 2021. Prior to that, Herring worked at Notre Dame for 10 years eventually becoming the Director of Public Affairs. She’s also served on “Notre Dame’s Human Resource’s Senior Leadership Team as director of the Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX coordinator. In this role, Herring provided oversight and support of the university’s efforts to comply with federal and state civil rights laws related to policies prohibiting discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Herring created Notre Dame’s affirmative action plans, had oversight of employee disability compliance for the campus, and oversaw workplace investigations falling under Title VII and Title IX.” She received her undergraduate degree from Purdue University. She later earned her law degree from Valparaiso University.

Republican Governor Eric Holcomb nominated Karrah Herring to the newly created position after protests and ensuing riots in Indianapolis following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where video captured an officer kneeling on Floyd for more than 8 minutes.

According to a news release from the governor’s office in November of 2020, “(Herring) will focus on improving state government operations as well as drive systemic change to remove hurdles in the government workplace and services the state provides. Herring will help agencies develop strategic plans to remove any barriers. As a member of the governor’s cabinet, Herring will report directly to the governor.”

RNM first wrote about the racist social media posts in 2021. RNM reached out to Governor Holcomb’s office for comment at the time. RNM sent copies of the posts in email and left a voicemail. The Governor’s office never responded.

RNM also reached out to Herring. She did not responded either.

Herring’s Twitter account is now deactivated.
