SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has discovered the Democrat Board Member of the St. Joseph County Voter Registration Office, Muhammad Shabazz, stepped down from his position as the top Democrat in the office. Shabazz and the county are currently being sued in a federal sexual harassment case.
Shabazz admitted to sexually harassing a Republican subordinate in the lead-up to the 2020 election. While Shabazz was “punished” by being forced to work from home for 2-weeks, he was never terminated for his actions. Positions in the office are appointed by the leaders of the two major parties and any changes in the office must be done at the direction of the party chair. The St. Joseph County Democrat Party Chair ignored calls for Shabazz’s termination for nearly a year-and-a-half. Sources tell RNM, Shabazz voluntarily stepped down for a job with the state. It’s unclear what that position is.
St. Joseph County Democrat Party Chair, Diana Hess, chose Amanda Konrath to fill the position. Konrath, who was a Voter Registration Deputy prior to the promotion, also has a checkered past within the office that includes accusations of abuse.
In an email obtained by REAL News Michiana, Konrath is accused of calling a Republican employee a “bitch” for assisting two republicans who were filing candidacy paperwork in the office in January. One of those people is the woman who is currently suing Shabazz in the sexual harassment case. The other is RNM journalist Clifton French, who filed paperwork to become a Republican Delegate.
RNM reached out to St. Joseph County Democrat Party Chair, Diana Hess, for comment on the resignation and promotion. As of publication we have not received a response.
