Cop Killer Released 1 Day After End of Watch Anniversary, Did Less Than Half of Sentence

Shawn Devin Mugshot

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — The man who is responsible for hitting and killing a Mishawaka Police Officer and his K-9 with his car in 2010, was released from prison the day after the 12 year anniversary of their deaths. Shawn Devine was paroled on Monday, January 10th. He hit and killed Corporal James Szuba and K-9 Ricky while fleeing police in a high speed chase on January 9th, 2010. Devine was also drunk at the time. A judge sentenced Devine to 31 years in prison. He did only 12.

“Imagine being a family member of a fallen officer, who’s loved one was taken from them while they were at work. Imagine going through the court process to seek “Justice.” And then a day after the anniversary of your loved one being taken from you, their killer is paroled from prison after not even serving HALF of the so-called “Justice” imposed on them… WHY?!” Mishawaka Officer and Federation of Police Lodge President, Rich Freeman wrote in a post on Facebook. “My deepest condolences to the Szuba family… I know what ‘I’ feel like right now, and it can’t come close to a fraction of what you feel.”

In his post, Freeman also related the treatment of Devine’s sentence to the current climate and treatment of police officers, explaining how situations like this are the reasons it is difficult to recruit and retain qualified police officers across the country. You can read his entire post below.
