GRANGER, Ind. — Hello fellow citizens. I am Dan Schaetzle, St. Joseph County Councilman for the Granger area. St. Joseph County Commissioner Carl Baxmeyer and I have very exciting news for Granger and the surrounding areas, including parts of District I, south of Douglas Road. We are pleased to announce the new location for the Granger auxiliary highway garage. The garage will be in an industrial area at the end of Alexander Road, which runs west off of Bittersweet between State Road 23 and Anderson Road.

Here are some of the reasons that the new location is a win for everyone.

  1. The new location is already zoned industrial and therefore is in an area where no resident’s
front door will directly face the facility.
  2. The water table is much deeper here than at the previously proposed Anderson Road
    location.
  3. The county has bought a little over five acres. This will be just large enough for a salt storage barn, a fuel station for vehicles and a building to house vehicles. This site isn’t large enough to ever be made into a full service highway garage, which means it will stay compact and less visible.
  4. The new location is centrally located. Once the facility is fully operational, the county will be
able to do a better job getting to all Granger subdivisions and areas south of Cleveland Road toward Osceola in a timely manner.
  5. This location will still allow us to follow all federal and state safety guidelines and include the extra safety measures that we planned on using at the Anderson Road location.
  6. Alexander Road is only used by industrial customers. The limited traffic produced by the
garage will not be a problem for any home owners.
  7. Lastly, the full 115 acres on the north side of Anderson Road and just east of the Beech Road can now be used for a park. The start of park construction depends on the County
Commissioners and County Council appropriating money for that purpose.

I would like to thank Commissioner Baxmeyer and Sky Medors, our County Highway Engineer. They have both worked very diligently to find a suitable Granger location for the garage. With the Cleveland Road facility required to be shut down in 2024, the first stage of construction at the new location has begun and will be completed sometime this year.

Finally a thank you to our residents who have patiently waited as county officials worked to find the right location for the garage. Together, we are making Granger and the surrounding communities an even better place to live.
