SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Downtown South Bend Post Office located on South Michigan Street announced it will be radically reducing its lobby hours due to safety concerns for customers. According to officials with the Post Office, police have been responding to the property nearly every day, the homeless have been using the lobby “as a bathroom” and a customer was recently attacked by someone wielding a “tool”.
“Due to the increase in disruptive nighttime activity in the Downtown South Bend area, we will be shortening the PO Box Lobby Hours effective 01/31/2024.” A letter to customers reads. “Our greatest concern is the safety of our customers and the security of the mail.”
The Downtown South Bend Post Office was the only location in the region with 24/7 PO Box Lobby access. Those hours are now being cut nearly in half — with the lobby being open from 6:00am-7:00pm.
This move comes only days after the Mayor of South Bend, James Mueller (D), claimed he felt safe in every part of the city, including Downtown
“I hear all of the time, Downtown’s not safe. Well, I live and work Downtown. I have never felt unsafe Downtown. But, I know some people do feel unsafe.” Mayor Mueller said at a press conference last week. “There’s not a place in the City of South Bend where I feel unsafe, there’s just not.”
