SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has learned a convicted sex offender, who attempted to have sex with a 14-year-old girl, attempted to work in today’s primary election as a poll worker at a local elementary school. According to sources with the St. Joseph County Clerk’s Office, 56-year-old Mitchell Mace presented himself at Lincoln Elementary School on the city’s southeast side claiming to be a volunteer to work the polls.

Clerk’s Office employees did not have a record of Mace to be a poll volunteer. At the same time, a school employee recognized Mace. That school employee told the vote center inspector he was a convicted sex offender. Mace was then immediately turned away.

Police in Chicago arrested Mace in September of 2019 for traveling across state lines to meet up with a 14-year-old girl for sex. He was convicted of the crimes and placed on the Sex Offender Registry in March of 2021.

Mace was a school bus driver for the South Bend Community School Corporation at the time of his arrest. He was quickly suspended and subsequently terminated from his position.
