INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has discovered two instances of babies born alive after botched abortions in one Indianapolis hospital. There is no documentation that the babies were provided life saving medical treatment, meaning the babies were likely left to die after being born alive. Both botched abortions happened last year within a few months of each other at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis. Both babies survived for hours outside of the womb before they eventually died.

The first abortion occurred on March 28th, 2022. According to documents provided to the Indiana Department of Health known as Terminated Pregnancy Reports (TPR), the abortion was conducted on a 23-year-old woman who was 20 weeks pregnant. She was illegally treated with chemicals commonly known as the “abortion pill.” In Indiana it is illegal to conduct an abortion using the abortion pill on a woman who is more than 10-weeks pregnant. According to the TPR, the baby was born alive and survived for 3-hours before it ultimately died.

The second abortion was conducted on July 1st, 2022. According to the TPR in that case, the abortion was performed on a 27-year-old married woman who was expecting a baby boy. The woman was also 20-weeks pregnant and the same abortion pill method was used illegally again. According to the TPR, the baby boy was born alive and survived for 2-hours before he died.

In the second case, it appears a fetal abnormality known as a Neural Tube Defect was detected in the baby boy via an ultrasound. This could mean the baby may have had a terminal condition known as anencephaly or a potentially survivable condition like spina bifida.

No fetal abnormalities were reported in the abortion from March. Subscribers can view both Terminated Pregnancy Reports for themselves below.

In both cases the babies are listed as being 20-weeks-old in utero. However, the “post fertilization age” was determined to be 18-weeks, which is the gestational age that is observed for abortion purposes. In Indiana, life saving measures only need to be performed on babies born alive if they are 20-weeks in post fertilization age or older.

“Babies born alive from botched abortions deserve protection.” Melanie Lyon, Executive Director of Hoosier Voices for Life, said in a statement. “ALL babies, born and preborn, deserve protection. Whenever a ‘Born Alive’ Bill is proposed on the federal or state level the pro-abortion side claims, ‘this law is unnecessary. This never happens.’ And yet, here, in our supposedly pro-life state, two babies have survived botched abortions in the past few months. Voices for Life has alerted the Indiana Department of Health and Attorney General of these disturbing incidents.”
