MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Law enforcement officials in St. Joseph County arrested an Elkhart man for allegedly raping a girl from the time she was 6-years-old and continued to rape the child for approximately three years.
According to court documents, 40-year-old James Morris was accused of the child rape in February of this year. While Morris initially denied the sexual abuse, DNA samples taken from a rape kit of the child confirmed the allegations. Those results were received by investigators late last week.
“The lab indicated that Morris’s (sic) DNA was found on three swabs taken from Victim 1, most notably from an external genital swab, from a swab of Victim 1’s pubic area, and a swab from Victim 1’s stomach.” The court documents read.
After being confronted about the DNA results, court documents allege Morris admitted to sexually assaulting the child on two different occasions; once in 2021 and again earlier this year, according to court documents. When he was informed that he was being placed under arrest, he stated that “he didn’t know why he was being arrested and he was not a ‘threat’ to (the victim) and that he was not sexually abusing Victim 1 because it was not ‘continuous’ and had only happened twice.”
All of the incidents occurred in Mishawaka. However, according to jail records, Morris lives in Elkhart. Court records show Morris with an address in South Bend.
