SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has learned of two violent incidents at a South Bend middle school, all happening within one school day at Dickinson Fine Arts Academy. First, a child was attacked and beaten by multiple other students in the morning. Then, police reports show a gun threat at the school later in the afternoon. All of this happened on Thursday of last week.
According to the South Bend Police Department, officers responded to a fight between students at 10:19am on March 10th. SBPD would not release additional details, but a source familiar with the case tells RNM 4 or 5 children attacked one child. Instead of attempting to intervene, several educators watched the attack with at least one of them taking video of the fight. RNM’s source, who wished to maintain anonymity, believes the teachers who stood by are not fully licensed educators and are currently teaching with provisional licenses.
Then, at 2:30pm, Dickinson received a gun threat. A spokesperson for SBPD tells RNM the school requested an increased police presence for several days.
“Any additional information regarding the threat will need to come from SBCSC, as this is still an open investigation on our end.” Ashley O’Chap, SBPD spokesperson, wrote in an email.
RNM reached out to the South Bend Community School Corporation for comment on both of the incidents. As of publication, we had not received a statement. Dickinson Fine Arts Academy is a D rated school in the state and is considered not to be meeting federal expectations either.
The South Bend Community School Corporation has expressed concerns about safety within several schools and requested to hire more officers and security. However, no officers were willing to take on the extra duty due to anti-police sentiment within the district.
