Juneteenth Mass Shooting in Granger

GRANGER, Ind. — REAL News Michiana continues to gather information about a mass shooting at a Juneteenth celebration in Granger. So far, it appears at least one person is dead and 4 others were shot, at what was billed as the “Juneteenth Summer Bash” in the Heritage Square area.

According to law enforcement officials, the shooting started around 3:00am on Sunday. At approximately 3:30am dispatch received reports from officers on scene that there were multiple victims, first responders were performing CPR on one person who did not have a heartbeat and 4 people had walked into local hospitals with gunshot wounds. Law enforcement officials have confirmed, at least 1 person died and 4 others were hurt in the shooting.

According to online fliers promoting the event, it was scheduled to run from 10:00pm until 3:00am at 7321 Heritage Square Dr., Suite 190 — which is the Heavenly Goat Brewery. You can see one of the fliers below.

Law enforcement sources tell RNM that no police security was requested for event. And, no law enforcement security was provided.

Another person was killed in a separate shooting in South Bend overnight. The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit identified the victims in the following statement on both shootings.

This morning at approximately 4:00 am, CMHU was called by dispatch to investigate a shooting at Heritage Square in Granger. A bar in the complex was the setting for an advertised party that drew a very large crowd. Upon arrival officers learned that multiple people had been shot. Five people were confirmed hit by gunfire. Four sustained non-life threatening injuries and one person was killed. There is evidence that suggests multiple weapons were discharged in the area resulting in a large crime scene. The family has been notified and the victim is Victor Anthwan Kyle, Jr., 26.

About an hour later, a second shooting was reported near the intersection of Olive and Elwood in South Bend. One person was killed by apparent gunfire. The family has been notified, and the name of the victim is Charles Edwards, 41. CMHU has mobilized all of our resources and appreciates all the assistance of our law enforcement partners from the Saint Joseph County Police, Mishawaka Police and South Bend Police departments.

The two separate shootings do not appear to be related and no arrests have been made in either shooting at this time. We continue to process both scenes for evidence and are speaking with witnesses.

Anyone who has information on either case is asked to call CMHU at 574-235-5009, Crime Stoppers at 288-STOP or your local police department.

ABC57 and WNDU both failed to mention this was a Juneteenth celebration in their stories. WSBT left that info out of the headline, as does the South Bend Tribune.

This is just one of several Juneteenth celebration shootings that happened across the country yesterday and overnight. One person was killed and 5 were hurt in a mass shooting in Oakland, California. In Flint, Michigan, a woman was killed after she allegedly fired at a police officer. Two people were killed and a 3-year-old was injured in a shooting in Philadelphia.

This comes on the heels of the local Black Lives Matter organization pushing to defund the local police departments, including pulling officers out of local schools.
