SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has learned a man police are currently searching for in connection to a South Bend murder in February was IN JAIL for a different gun related crime FIVE MONTHS AFTER the alleged murder took place. And, despite having a previous gun crime conviction, was allowed to bond out of jail for less than $5,000.
23-year-old Marshawn Johnson is currently wanted for murder for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of James Stewart III on February 1st, 2024. Stewart was found shot to death inside of a car near the intersection of Johnson Street and Fassnacht Avenue on South Bend’s northwest side. Two other men, 23-year-old Demarko Robinson and 20-year-old Jamir Johnson are also being charged in Stewart’s death. Both Robinson and Jamir Johnson have been captured and are being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.

MARSHAWN JOHNSON’S CRIMINAL HISTORY
According to court records, Marshawn Johnson was charged with shooting into a building, battery with a deadly weapon and auto theft in July of this year. He bonded out of jail the following day . This incident was FIVE months after his alleged involvement in the murder of Stewart on February 1st. It’s unclear if Marshawn Johnson was on the radar of detectives for Stewart’s murder at the time and why he was given such a lenient bond for such an egregious crime.
In 2019, Marshawn Johnson was charged with carrying a gun on school property and carrying a gun without a license. He was offered and accepted a plea deal, dismissing the Felony gun charge and accepting a misdemeanor charge of carrying a firearm without a license.
