SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Nearly two months after the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, the Republican run St. Joseph County Council continues to employ a staffer who took to social media to describe how she wished the would-be assassin had been a better shot. It turns out, the staffer is also close friends with, and the babysitter for, St. Joseph County Councilwoman Amy Drake.
On July 13th, the Secretary for the St. Joseph County Council, Jennifer Prawat, took to social media to praise the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
“Close but no cigar.” Prawat wrote in a Facebook post before going into a longer tirade full of lies to justify more violence against the President. “When Hitler 2.0 is on the horizon… you bet your sweet ass (I’m wishing death on President Trump). I’m looking out for the future of my children… the future of me… the future of all my living family members. Remember, this is a man who said he could shoot somebody and not lose any voters. This is from a ‘man’ who wants to put himself above the law in Project 2025.”
The posts have since been deleted.
PRAWAT, DRAKE AND GOP ATTACK MAGA
Earlier this summer, Prawat also attacked a retired Army veteran who is running for PHM School Board and using his nickname of “MAGA” on the ballot. She went on to make strange remarks about how MAGA has evil hidden meanings. Councilwoman Drake then used her surrogate, St. Joseph County Council Candidate Anthony “Andy” Rutten, to file a complaint with the St. Joseph County Election Board to have that candidate removed from the ballot. That complaint was eventually successful, and Ben Dallas MAGA was removed from the ballot earlier this summer.
PRAWAT’S COZY RELATIONSHIP WITH “CONSERVATIVE” COUNCILMEMBERS
Prawat serves as the Secretary to a Republican run County Council, which raises the question of how such a radical Democrat has been able to maintain a job under a conservative majority. It turns out, Prawat is close friends with Republican St. Joseph County Councilwoman Amy Drake. They are so close in fact, that Prawat babysits Drake’s children, according to multiple sources.
“This woman is radically insane.” One source who is familiar with the relationship between Prawat and Drake told REAL News Michiana. “How Amy can trust someone like that to care for her own children shows extremely poor judgement.”
Prawat also endorsed Republican Randy Figg and praised Republican Joe Thomas during the Republican primary this past May.
REAL News Michiana reached out to all of the Republican Councilmembers and the Council Attorney to get a statement regarding the disturbing posts made by Prawat. Amy Drake, Mark Root, Joe Thomas, Randy Figg and attorney Jamie O’Brien all did not respond.
Councilmember Dan Schaetzle was the lone Republican councilmember to make a statement.
“This post from Jenn is very disappointing.” Schaetzle wrote in a statement. “All Americans need to tone down this type of rhetoric.”
Nearly a week later, Drake requested the St. Joseph County GOP Chair put out a statement to party members on the council’s behalf. The statement was never sent to the media and did not call for Prawat’s termination or resignation.
All of this comes on the heels of the GOP’s efforts to reduce party transparency as GOP Vice Chair Joe Layne and Chairwoman Jackie Horvath have been pushing for people within the party to sign non-disclosure agreements.
RNM reached out to Prawat for comment. She responded in email by claiming she was not able to see the posts that were sent to her.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated Prawat endorsed Joe Thomas during his primary this past spring. Thomas was elected in 2022 and was not on the ballot in 2024. However, Prawat has previously taken to social media to praise Thomas’ work on the council.
