SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has learned all charges against former South Bend Common Council District 2 candidate Roosevelt Stewart (R) have been dismissed. South Bend Police arrested Stewart in August of 2023 after he was accused of beating and strangling his 15-year-old daughter in a drunken rampage. A judge dismissed all charges Wednesday morning.
Stewart has denied the allegations since the beginning, claiming his daughter made up a story after he took her cell phone away to discipline her. He claims detectives then influenced the girl’s initial statements by walking her through circumstances that would increase the severity of the charges against him.
“I’m grateful the truth has come out regarding this unfortunate situation involving me and my family.” Stewart told RNM in a statement. “I want to thank everyone for the support they have shown us during this time. Now, it’s time for my family and I to move forward and heal.”
The arrest occurred less than three months before the 2023 general election and is believed to have had a major impact on Republican races across the ticket.
