SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana is learning more about the drunk driving arrest of a well-known area lawyer, Notre Dame Law Professor and former South Bend School Board Member. According to arrest documents, Rodolfo “Rudy” Monterrosa nearly crashed into a South Bend Police cruiser prior to being pulled over early in the morning on July 4th. Tests later showed he had a blood alcohol content of .203, more than 2-and-a-half times the legal limit.
According to court documents, the arresting officer witnessed Monterrosa swerve in and out of his lane multiple times while driving down Portage Avenue at approximately 1:00am. At one point, the officer “was forced to pull to the side of the road in order to avoid being struck by the oncoming vehicle.” The charging documents can be read in their entirety below.

This is the 10th time Rodolfo Monterrosa has been cited for breaking traffic laws since 2010. However, every single citation he has received was eventually dropped. It’s unclear how Rodolfo Monterrosa was able to get all of his traffic citations dismissed. That being said, according to Rodolfo Monterrosa’s bio on the Notre Dame website, he currently serves as the Supervising Attorney for the St. Joseph County Traffic & Misdemeanor deputy public defenders. Monterrosa is also a large financial donor to the St. Joseph County Democrat Party.

Rodolfo Monterrosa is a founding member of Monterrosa Law Group. He is also currently an elected member of the German Township Advisory Board (Democrat), former School Board Member for the South Bend Community School Corporation and current board member of the non-profit La Casa de Amistad. Another former board member of La Casa de Amistad, Sam Centellas, was arrested multiple times for drunk driving.
Rodolfo Monterrosa is married to another attorney in his firm, Cecilia Monterrosa. Earlier this year, Cecilia Monterrosa was reprimanded by the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission for violating Indiana’s Professional Conduct Rules. A PDF describing her illegal actions as an attorney can be viewed below.
