SOUTH BEND, Ind. — REAL News Michiana has discovered a local organization responsible for organizing and hosting annual drag shows for children has received support from St. Joseph County Sheriff William Redman. Not only has the Sheriff vocalized support for the group, he visited the organization to give a speech to children in attendance.
In June of last year, Sheriff Redman spoke at South Bend’s LGBTQ Center’s Daytime Youth Summit. He brought the department’s mascot, Sheriff Bruno the dog and posted about the visit to Facebook.
“Thank you The LGBTQ Center for inviting me and Sheriff Bruno to speak at their daytime youth summit this afternoon.” Redman posted on his Facebook page with a picture of himself, another deputy and the dog. The post also included a name tag attached to a lanyard where Redman gave his preferred pronouns.

The LGBTQ Center has hosted drag shows for children for years and was promoting the events as early as 2019. Earlier this summer, REAL News Michiana published a story in which a local Girl Scout Troop was taken to a drag show at the LGBTQ Center, where they tipped the drag queens with Girl Scout cookies.
“Happy PRIDE month from our troop to yours. Troop 00271 held an amazing Speak Love painting PRIDE history event on June 2nd with a lovely group of attendees from various parts of council and tonight 00271 donated to the LGBTQ+ Center of South Bend and attended the all ages Drag show!! We even tipped in Girl Scout Cookies!!!” A Facebook post, by Nicole Wyatt Wiles, said. Wiles appears to be the leader for Girl Scout Troop 00271 out of Osceola.
The post includes several pictures, including one appearing to show a little girl tipping a drag queen with a box of cookies at a drag show for kids on June 3rd.

According to a Facebook Advertisement for the event, “After a two year covid induced hiatus All Ages Drag is back! Join us June 3rd at the LGBTQ Center for the kickoff to Pride Season in Michiana! Advance Tickets are $10 for Adults(18+), $5 for Youth (5-17), Children 4 and under are free.”

RNM has traced multiple “All Ages Drag Show” events to the LGBTQ Center going back for years, where the events have been promoted on the organization’s Facebook page.
