SOUTH BEND, Ind. — ABC57 Chief Meteorologist Tom Coomes took to social media on Thursday to erroneously claim REAL News Michiana’s Clifton French was using a “burner” Facebook account to promote misleading narratives about vaccines. Today, RNM is requesting Coomes be terminated from his position and that ABC57 publicly apologize for the libelous behavior of their representative.
Coomes made up the story on his official ABC57 Facebook profile after one of his followers commented on a post he made regarding risks and vaccines. You can see the post below.
Soon after making the post, one of Coomes followers commented by saying, in part, “Take your leftist white privilege down to the minority neighborhoods. Go and tell them they should get vaccinated and what you think about them.”
The poster, who claims to be a minority, attacked Coomes for being racist, claiming the local TV personality was essentially discriminating against people of color. Coomes then quickly claimed the person making the comments was RNM’s Clifton French in multiple posts. You can see the thread below.
RNM was notified of the libelous actions being committed by Mr. Coomes via text message, which can also be seen below.
After being notified of the libel via text message, RNM reached out to Mr. Coomes on the Facebook thread. Instead of apologizing for his mistake, Coomes doubled down with his false narrative. You can see that post below.
RNM reached out to ABC57 news director Kyle Fobe and General Manager Aaron Ramey via email for comment and asking for Coomes to be terminated from his position. As of publication, they have not responded.

I (Clifton French) am fully vaccinated. I have a child with disabilities and received the vaccine based on advice from my doctor. I believe these are personal decisions that need to be made by the individual based on their own specific circumstances. I am against vaccine and mask mandates. I am also against being forced to inject any substance into your body.
